When Helping Hurts

The real test of delegation comes when your team struggles.

A team member returns with questions, uncertainty, or incomplete work—and the leader steps in to “fix it.” It feels efficient. It feels helpful. But it comes at a cost.

Every time you take the task back, you send a subtle message: “I don’t trust you to figure this out.”

Great leaders resist the urge to jump in. Instead, they coach. They teach. They guide their team member to find the answer—rather than providing it.

It may take more time in the moment, but it builds something far more valuable: ownership, confidence, and capability.
